Gretel Shanley's career encompasses almost every aspect of classical flute playing: movie studio work, premieres of amplified bass flute, Baroque flute, premieres of contemporary solo works for over twenty five years (fourteen years with the Monday Evening Concerts) and solo and ensemble recordings including the Westwood Wind Quintet (Crystal CD's #801, 250 and 321.)

She has been a Teacher Trainer for the Suzuki Association of the Americas and has taught at several colleges including Oberlin, Ohio. At CSU Northridge she prepared and directed eight masterclasses for Jean-Pierre Rampal. As Program Chairman for the National Flute Association in San Diego, she designed a four-day convention for "Worldwide Artistry and Communication." Her "Happyworld" activities focus on peace from birth to three with music and include presentations for the Season for Nonviolence.

Gretel Yvonne Shanley is listed in the International "Who's Who" of Musicians and received a Fulbright Grant for Flute study at the Paris Conservatory. She began her professional career at the age of twenty with recordings - the first of the Eastman Wind Ensemble series with Frederick Fennell. Shortly afterwards she joined the Rochester Philharmonic with conductor Eric Leinsdorf and first flutist Joseph Mariano, her teacher, and a superb artist. Ms. Shanley was the first woman flutist to be hired in that orchestra and in several others, including the National Symphony, where she played first flute during a guest appearance by conductor Leonard Bernstein. After coming to Kaua'i she performed as 1st flutist for two seasons in the Maui Symphony.
